Now that autumn is upon us, with its gloomy skies and reduced daily sunlight, those of us who run, walk or bicycle in the hours before or after the traditional work day will be out on the roads in the dark. We thought that we would share some driving tips to ensure that we don’t have a negative car impact experience – or simply, get hit by a car.

Tip #1. In the fading light and rainy weather, it would be most prudent for drivers to slow down. Not only does the lack of light make it hard to see what is on the road, but often the roads are wet and slippery. Drivers’ reaction time would increase, which could be valuable in avoiding deer, livestock or pets that might be on the road, as well as pedestrians.

Tip #2. When approaching a pedestrian, dim your headlights. We are blinded by high beams. Low beams will keep both of us safe.

Tip #3. Due to the nature and classification of these rural roads, the law puts the responsibility of a safe passage on the driver. Though we promise to do everything we can to be seen, automobile drivers must ensure that they pass in a safe manner.  Slow down, assess the situation and pass in a safe manner.

Tip#4. If you need to get somewhere, ensure that you leave for your destination with enough time to drive cautiously and arrive safely. In other words – leave earlier.

Tip #5. Do not drive after drinking or consuming alcohol.

We promise to do the following:

1. We will wear highly visible clothing and reflective wear as well as headlamps and warning lights. This will help you see us.

2. We will run/walk on the left hand side of the road approaching traffic.

3. We will ride our bicycle on the right side of the road and will use appropriate warning lights in addition to obeying traffic laws.

4. We will participate in our chosen exercise in a safe and responsible manner.

5. We promise, when meeting an approaching vehicle, to walk or run in a single file, ensuring room for a safe passage.

6. We will not consume alcoholic beverages and run/walk or ride our bikes as this could compromise our ability to do the above.

Let us all be safe out there during these dark days and show each other some respect.

Sincerely,
